History

Early in 2001 South Perth Church of Christ sent a team to India to investigate potential ministry opportunities.  The need for health care was evident in many of the areas that they visited. In 2002, Jason James, a member of the church and a nurse by profession, was challenged to organize a medical team to visit India.  The initial intent was simply to get a group of health professionals together to provide treatment and encouragement for as many people as possible in several rural settings.   Much effort was spent gathering sponsorship from the medical and pharmaceutical community across Australia.

In February 2003 this eleven-member team of doctors, nurses, midwives and general helpers left for a three-week trip to Southern India. The trip was a success.  They helped over 1200 people who had little or no access to quality health care.  Despite some initial difficulties they adapted well to the dust, language, food, heat and culture of rural India. Ten Medical Clinics were conducted in six different rural locations with people being treated free of charge for a wide range of conditions; everything from common colds and muscle soreness to more complex gastric and respiratory problems, women's health issues, heart problems and a wide variety of skin conditions.

Through translators health education was also conducted in the local languages. At times we were overwhelmed by large numbers of people seeking medical care. During this trip the team came across five patients who required urgent surgical treatment.  To facilitate this links were established with two reputable hospitals in Bangalore.  These links have developed and over the years Cosmos HealthCare has helped provide a life changing treatment for such as reconstructive, cardiac and general surgery for over 100 needy people.

Since 2003, the focus of Cosmos HealthCare has widened.  We believe that wherever possible medical care should form part of a holistic community health program.  To this end we now develop strategic partnerships that support health programs run by indigenous staff, encompassing physical, spiritual, education, sanitation, water supply and economic aspects of health care.

Our organisation now supports a permanent clinic in southern India and employs staff India and also at our office in Perth Western Australia. We are committed to developing partnerships to facilitate community health programs in India and Africa. We currently send regular short-term teams to support our projects and rely on volunteers for much of our administrative and medical function.
