Zimbabwe Project

We are excited about what lies ahead. With our work in India established we are expanding our vision to other parts of the world. In March 2007, a survey team spent three weeks in Zimbabwe and Zambia visiting existing health services and investigating possible partnerships.

We were drawn to Zimbabwe. Since this trip we have identified several partners  and with a common vision our goal is to partner in establishing a new community health project in this struggling nation.

While there are some challenges working in this part of the world we are focused on delivering on our promises, we are not giving up on this nation in such great need.

May 2009 saw our first medical team visit to Zimbabwe. The team worked in an area east of Bulawayo called Dadaya, near the town of Zvishivane. Despite some initial registration difficulties, the ten person team ran general clinics in eight villages as well as a half-day school clinic over a two week period. While numbers of patients are not the measure of success or our impact, it gives an indication of need in the area. During this fortnight our team of volunteers (along with our local partners) assisted around 1200 people.

Many of the clinics we worked in had very little medical supplies, a lot of the equipment was outdated and often broken, and many medicines, though readily prescribed, were simply unavailable or far too expensive for the average rural person. Our translators were invaluable in this setting assisting us with communication and education.

Having seen the need, we are now working to establish a long term, locally run medical project. We are adapting our plans to the local context.

Two teams are scheduled to visit Zimbabwe in 2010 (See Teams in 2010).
