My first experience in India was unforgettable. I had never been overseas before, let alone to remote rural villages where some people had little more than the clothes they wore. Where there was no running water and where people suffered for years with illnesses that we wouldn't put up with for more than a few days. Each day was packed with new experiences. The excitement of a new, and very different culture, captivated me. The simpleness of the way the people lived and their selfless attitudes challenged me. The volume of people sometimes overwhelmed me. The contentedness of the people motivated me. My fears of being a "non medical" person, fitting into a medical team, were soon proved to be unfounded as I realised the importance of having a servant heart. From collecting medications for the patients from our makeshift pharmacy, to controlling the crowds, to bathing an ulcer, to praying silently for patients, there was more than enough to keep a "non medical" person occupied and feeling like an important part of a team. I am excited about, and looking forward with anticipation to returning to India again. As we minister to people in a physical way, thus breaking down cultural and religious barriers and building bridges, I am looking forward to see God work powerfully again in a spiritual way, in the hearts and lives of such needy people.
